Russell George

December 7, 1948 — February 21, 2026

Gilbert

Russell Leonard George, 77 of Gilbert, Minn., passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, surrounded by his family.

Russell lived a life defined by service, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Corporal, Russell embodied the spirit of “once a Marine, always a Marine,” and he was especially proud that his son, Luke followed in his footsteps in service. After serving, Russell worked the remainder of his career in the iron mines as a millwright. He was a skilled tradesman and was respectfully considered a “go-to” A-team crew member with new machine assemblies as well as maintenance.

Russell was married to his beloved wife, Jane Marie Blaskowski for 46 years. They raised their two children, Erin and Luke, with a loving upbringing, always present and fully engaged in their lives. That same steady presence carried into his role as Grandpa, whether courtside, on the field, or in the stands. He was a constant - always watching, always cheering - his pride and encouragement unwavering.

Upon retirement, Russell and Jane became “globetrotters,” traveling to a variety of countries and visiting America’s national parks. They were a dynamic, magnetic duo whose authentic and outgoing personalities easily formed friendships with fellow travelers wherever they went.

On the homefront, gatherings were often enjoyed in the garage - the all-season “man-camp” - a favorite venue for conversations as a couple or with family and friends. Always physically active and happiest when working with his hands, Russell took pride in keeping busy around the home. He also served his community as a dedicated volunteer member of the Biwabik Township Fire Department, and he enjoyed camaraderie and competition as a member of a local senior league curling team.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Russell found great joy in the outdoors. The infamous “Greaney” shack held a special place for Russell - or, as the crew knew him, “Porky.” Whether deer or grouse hunting, everyone knew when Russ had taken his shot. He proudly claimed to be the fastest draw on the Range. Seasonal fishing expeditions to Trout Lake and Lake Kabetogama became legend, filled with memorable catches and even better stories that will live on for years.

Russell’s authenticity, sincerity, and steady presence will be greatly missed and well-remembered.

Russell is survived by his wife, Jane George of Gilbert; daughter, Erin (Jeff) Shay of Hibbing; son, Luke George (Karen Smith) of Lino Lakes; brother, David (Cindy) George of Gilbert; and grandchildren: Addison, Isabella, Drew, and Elizabeth; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Illene George; brother, Leon; and sisters, Carol, Barb, and Jean.

Honoring Russell’s wishes, the family will gather for a private burial at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Duluth. A celebration of life event will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th at the Biwabik Township Hall.
