Matthew Crep

Matthew Joseph “Matt” Crep, 75, of Hoyt Lakes, died Monday, March 9, 2026, at Essentia Health–Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. He passed away doing what he loved—swimming with his morning pool group who had become a second family.

Matt was born December 11, 1950, to Joseph and Maryann (Rebrovich) Crep in Eveleth. He graduated from Gilbert High School with the Class of 1968. Matt was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. On April 18, 1970, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Michalski, and together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and community.

Matt worked as an electrician for Erie Mining and later LTV Steel until its closure. He most recently worked at United Taconite until his retirement.

Matt was a devoted family man and friend who never missed an opportunity to show up for those he loved.

He enjoyed swimming, exercising with his fitness center family, biking, cheering on his grandkids, attending concerts and theatre productions, and spending time at the family cabin. Matt will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of conversation, and the way he supported the people he cared about in both big and small ways.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathie; daughter, Dena (David) Pietila of Makinen; son, Keith (Christie) Crep of Mahtomedi; grandchildren, Matthew, Addie, and Camryn Crep; three grand dogs; siblings, Thomas Crep, Mark (Terri) Crep, Steven (Kathy) Crep, Cathy Crep, Mike (Evonne) Crep, Mary Bradach, and Marge Crep; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father- and mother-in-law, Joe and Hazel Michalski.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert, with Deacon Mark Skala officiating. Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be accorded by the Gilbert VFW Color Guard.

In lieu of flowers, funds received will be dedicated to a memorial in Matt’s honor.
