Leonard “Butch” Junior Herrmann, 87, of Biwabik peacefully passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at The Waterview Woods in Eveleth.
Butch was born on February 4, 1939 to George and Barbara (Brunner) Herrmann in Fairmount, ND. He graduated from Fairmount High School, Class of 1957. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Army where he served four years as a dental assistant. Butch continued his education at UMD earning a degree in elementary education and then later a Master's degree from Bemidji State. He taught elementary education at Biwabik and Mesabi East School districts for thirty years, teaching 4th grade and 5th grade science. He was also a Swim Coach. During his time teaching, Butch also worked for Hayden Marine and was a firearm safety instructor for many years.
He was united in marriage to Carlotta Voight on October 22, 1966. The couple made their home in Biwabik where they raised two children. Butch was a member of the Masonic Lodge #293 in Biwabik, a charter member of the Biwabik Lions Club, and a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora. He was a member of the “Aqua-Nutz Group” where he enjoyed fishing trips with his friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, spending time at the shack, golfing, and bowling. He took the greatest pleasure in being a grandpa and supporting his grandchildren in their sports and other activities.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years: Carlotta “Lottie”; children: Devon (Lee Anne) Herrmann of Mt. Iron and Kristin (Keith) Maki of Biwabik; grandchildren: Brooke (Steve) Esping, Connor and Cody Herrmann, and Kaden and Keaton Maki; great-grandchildren: Melina, Oakley, Laken, and Finlee; sister, Darlene Moore of Underwood, MN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Ralph Herrmann, Dorothy Gunderson-Baumann, Arnold “Bud” Herrmann, Lorraine Olson, and Donald and Stan Herrmann; several nieces and nephews; and his parents.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora with Pastor Greg Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Inurnment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik. Arrangements are by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home. Memorials are kindly preferred in lieu of flowers.
