Jack Alan Makela 86, of Gilbert died Monday, June 22, 2026 at his home of natural causes.

He was born March 11, 1940 in Virginia the son of Toivo and Elma (Kauppinen) Makela.

Jack graduated from Virginia High School and Virginia Junior College, where he attained his Business Degree from the University of Minnesota.

He enlisted in the United States Army and he served in Korea. On August 12, 1967 Jack married Geri at the Finnish Lutheran Church in Virginia, MN. He was proud of his 100% Finnish heritage. He is a member of Gilbert United Methodist Church, he is a former Shriner, a former Moose Club member, Gilbert VFW member and served as an Honor Guard.

He was employed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia, IDS as a Computer Programmer, Target, Dayton Hudson as a System Analyst retiring after 36 years.

He found enjoyment in fishing, gardening, billiards and tipping back a Grain Belt or two with his friends and neighbors.

He is survived by children, Toni Lee Reed, Kieth (Ella Mancina) and Jeannie Mancina Kennedy. Grandchildren, Allison, Mathew, Amanda, Gina, Bobby Jackson, Morgan Daniel, Jacob and Joshua. Nephew, Gary and Great Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geri, parents, sister Marcia, nephews Rocky and Chris, son Michael Mancina and wife Debbie, Granddaughter Katherine Lee Kennedy.

A Service will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the Gilbert Community United Methodist Church with visitation at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM and Luncheon following the service to be held at the Gilbert VFW. Arrangements are with Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.
