Harold George Olmstead August 8, 1941 – June 5, 2025
Harold George Olmstead, age 83, of Hoyt Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully in the early afternoon on June 5, 2025, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN.
Harold was born on August 8, 1941, in Rice Lake, WI, to George Frank Olmstead and Frances Marie (Krohn) Olmstead. He was one of seven children and is survived by his sisters Carolann (Olmstead) Johnson, Rita (Olmstead) Karolczak, and Vickie (Olmstead) Olson; and brothers Larry Olmstead and Terry Olmstead. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dale Olmstead.
Harold proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After his service, he settled in Hoyt Lakes, MN, where he spent over 60 years of his life. He worked for more than four decades at Erie and LTV Steel, earning the respect of coworkers and community members alike.
Family was everything to Harold. He is survived by his children: Shelle Heaton-Crawford (husband Phillip Crawford), Scott Olmstead (wife Stephanie Mascarenas), and Cody Olmstead. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Greg Olmstead. Harold was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren—Courtney, Kennedy, Natalie, Oliver, Samuel, Marissa, Dominic, Allison, and Freddy—and great-grandfather to Thomas.
Harold had a deep love for the outdoors. He found peace and joy in hunting, fishing, and golfing. Whether he was exploring the woods or enjoying a quiet moment at the lake, nature was his happy place. He was also known for his outgoing spirit and loved spending time with friends, family, and his community.
Harold's warmth, sense of humor, and strong presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on August 2nd at the Hoyt Lakes Community Center from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
