Memorial service for Frank Henry Altmann, 76, of Hoyt Lakes will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2025 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora with Pastor Charles Barnes officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of your liking.
Frank died Tuesday May 6, 2025 at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s in Duluth, Minnesota.
He was born January 18, 1949 in Mellen, Wisconsin to Frank and Violet (Engeldinger) Altmann. He was a 1967 graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School and later began working for Erie Mining Company in the safety department. On October 24, 1970 he married Catherine Ferguson in Virginia, Minnesota.
The couple moved to Duluth where Frank worked for Gold Cross Ambulance and later for St. Louis County as a safety inspector. He returned to LTV Steel and worked there as a shovel operator until its closure. Then, he attended Lake Superior College and earned a certificate in Phlebotomy. Following his graduation, he worked for St. Mary’s Medical Center for 15 years as a Phlebotomist in Duluth, commuting from Hoyt Lakes every day. He was affectionately known as “The Candyman” because he was know to have a pocket full of Werther’s to hand out to coworkers.
Frank loved exploring on his computer, stopping at a casino and had a generous gift of gab! Family and pets were his pride and joy and he enjoyed raising cocker spaniels.
Survivors include his wife, Katie; sons: John (Kristen) Altmann of Pine City and Andrew (Rosa) Altmann of West Melbourne, FL; grandchildren: Ashlynn, Tony, Emma, Olivia, Lyndsie, Charlie, Elliot, Laura, Lillian and Annarose; brother, Richard (Donna) Altmann; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Marv Koski; and his canine companion, Buttercup.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Violet Altmann; his in-laws, John and Jean Maki; niece, Rachel Koski; nephew, Michael Altmann; and his best friend, Art Cherro.
