Richard W. Shain

Funeral service for Richard W. Shain, 86, of Aurora, will be 11am Monday, November 22, 2010 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Aurora with Rev. Paul Buettner officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Forest Hill Cemetery Columbarium. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home of Aurora. Mr. Shain died Wed. Nov. 17, 2010 at Essentia Health-Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. He was born May 10, 1924 in Biwabik, MN to John and Johanna Shain. As an infant, his family lived in Joliet, Illinois and in Kinney, MN. He was a Biwabik High School graduate in 1943. He began working at Lake Mine and was drafted into the US Navy. He served three years in the Pacific Theatre during WWII as an electrician on a LST ship. He was discharged on Apr. 28, 1946. Richard returned home and to his job at Lake Mine. He was an automotive mechanic. Later he transferred to Erie Mining Company in 1964, following the closure of Lake Mine. He retired fro LTV Steel on June 28, 1984. Richard married Jennie Kivisto on March 1, 1952 in Eveleth, MN. They had five children. Richard was active in the Boy Scouts during his son's earlier years. His hobbies include working with his metal lathe with which he produced small tractors, jokers, a mini bike, a bike rack and a go-cart for his sons. He was handyman and remodeled their home, putting in plumbing, wiring and woodwork. He enjoyed gardening, going to festivals and garage sales. He and his wife traveled extensively with their motor home and camper van visiting their children and relatives and visiting national parks and tourist attractions all across the United States. He was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Aurora, a member of the Aurora American Legion Post 241 and SOAR. Survivors include his wife, Jennie, daughter, Diane (Douglas) Dawson of Pinelas Park, FL, sons, Dennis of Centralia, WI, Norman (Debi) of Aurora, Bill (Barb)of Pine Island and Gordon of Aurora, six grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, brothers, Bernard (Eva) of Lakeland and David (Donna) of Marshfield, MA and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Albert, sister-in-law, Shirley, two infant brothers and one granddaughter, Lori.
