Jim Krause

Memorial Mass for Jim Krause, 74 of Rural Gilbert, will be 2 pm at St. Josephs Catholic church in Gilbert with Fr. Frank Perkovich celebrating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Jim Krause was born in Eveleth on March 10, 1935 to John and Marie (Hribar) Krause Jim attended and graduated from Gilbert High and Eveleth Jr. College. Early in his career, Jim worked for both IRRRB and Phillip Morris. As a young boy, Jim started working for his father at the Gilbert Herald setting type and writing articles for the weekly publication. He purchased the business in 1962. During his career, Jim was the owner and publisher of the Gilbert Herald, Mt. Iron Maverick, Range Scene and Eveleth Scene. He spent over 60 years in the newspaper business promoting both Gilbert and Eveleth. During that time, Jim was recognized as an award-winning publisher on numerous occasions by the Minnesota Newspaper Association, by the Minnesota VFW for his support of community relations and by the Minnesota Education Association for his support of education in the press. His passion for cooking led him to the restaurant business several times, he owned the A&W drive-in located in Cook for many years before moving it to Gilbert in 1967 and re-opening it as the Burger Hut. Later he also owned and operated The Villa in Gilbert for a number of years. Jim was involved in various civic activities including the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Eveleth Elks, Gilbert Charter Commission, Boy Scout Leader and along with his wife Kathie, was an organizer of the first Gilbert 3rd of July Parade. He also published a History of Gilbert in early ‘90s. His passion was entertaining and relaxing with friends and family at his home on Bass Lake. Jim was an avid fan, whether supporting the Vikings, Gophers and Wild. As a season ticket holder, trips to the Twins games in recent years brought particular joy. He is survived by his children; Joel (Nancy Griemann) Krause of Rosemount, Jill (Nathan) Salo of Gilbert, John (Lisa) Krause of Crystal, Michael (Debbie) Halenbeck, of Belle Plaine and Nathan Krause of Gilbert. Grandchildren; Ashley Krause, Seth and Bray Salo, Rebecca, Kyla and José Krause, Adam and Katherine Halenbeck. Siblings; Jack (Betty) of Sun Lakes, AZ, Janet McCarthy (John) of Roseville and Jeaninne of Glendale, CA. He was preceded in death by wives Kathie (Thompson) and Judy (Pfarr), and parents John and Marie Krause.
