Joann L. Matts

Funeral service for Joann Louise Matts, 85, of Virginia, formerly of Pike Township, will be 11am Friday, July 21, 2017 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Pastor Brad Felix officiating. Visitation will begin at 9am. Burial will be in the East Pike Cemetery in Pike Township, MN. Joann was born August 30, 1931 in Cherry, MN to John and Mayme (Rasula) Waltanen. She was a graduate of Cherry High School and later attended Duluth Business School. On January 19, 1957 she married Morris Matts. Joann worked as a bookkeeper for the Lenont-Peterson Clinic and was a motor route carrier for the Mesabi Daily News for many years. She was also an active volunteer for numerous charities and organizations. Joann was a member of the Virginia Bible Chapel, the Pike-Sandy Women’s Club and a life member of TOPS. Survivors include her children: Kristin (Neil) Heimes of Norfolk, Neb, Kevin Matts of Gilbert and Carleen (Scott) Matts-Behrends of Shakopee; grandchildren: Amy (Jason) Larson, Joy (Mark) Nealeigh, John, Alissa, and Andrew Heimes and Matthew Gulstad; great grandchildren: Jay and Eden Nealeigh; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Morris; son, Cedric and siblings: Ruth, Carolyn and John.
