Elizabeth C. Chellew

Celebration of Life for Elizabeth (Liz) Christiana Chellew, 91, of Silver Bay, formerly of Biwabik, will be 1:00pm Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik with Pastor John Szarke officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Mrs. Chellew passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at the Silver Bay Veterans Home in Silver Bay, MN. The family would like to thank all the staff of the Silver Bay Veterans Home for the exceptional loving care given to Liz over the past years. Liz was born on February 22, 1925 in Biwabik, MN to Joseph and Josephine (Donatelle) Colangelo. She grew up and attended school in Biwabik. On April 17, 1948 Liz married her High School sweetheart, Earl Chellew, at the Community Church in Biwabik. The couple made their home in Biwabik and were lifelong residents. Liz was employed by the Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory in Gilbert for many years. Liz was a member of the Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik, the Biwabik American Legion Auxiliary, and the Biwabik Garden Club. She was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed bowling and crocheting. She and Earl enjoyed their casino trips, traveling, especially to Hawaii and Las Vegas, and spending time fishing at their cabin on Lake Vermilion. Survivors include her only daughter, Beth (Lynn) Babcock of Aurora; grandchildren Audrey Babcock of Minneapolis and Earl (Noemi Szekely) Babcock of Munich, Germany; one expected great grandchild; Jill (Bezek) Stachyra of Vienna, VA, who was like a daughter to her; sister-in-law Yvonne Chellew of San Jose, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine Colangelo; husband, Earl; and siblings, Rose, Amico, Ann, Mary, Adeline, Anthony, Viola, and Frank.
